160 St Heliers School Children!

It was a very early start for 160 St Heliers School children as they arrived to participate in the Weetbix Tryathlon on Sunday 12 February. The new venue of Pt England Reserve was fantastic, and it was hard to believe that there were actually 2800 children taking part on the day.

This spacious venue offered a slightly more challenging course for the children, in that the swim was a little deeper, and the cycle began with a small uphill, but every single St Heliers athlete gave it their all and had a wonderful time. With many having joined in on the training sessions, the team were well prepared and their faces were bursting with happiness and pride.

As they crossed the finish line the children were greeted by sporting celebrities including Olympians Eliza McCartney, Sarah Cowley and All Black Reiko Ioane, and some were lucky enough to get photos and autographs.

Our school easily won the award for the biggest team at the event, and received a $300 Rebel sports voucher for the school, and a shotput set signed by Valerie Adams.

This event is incredibly well organised and is such a great opportunity for the children to feel independent and proud while receiving a huge amount of support and encouragement. I would strongly recommend it to any child who has not yet taken part. Perhaps we could achieve an even bigger team next year!

A very big congratulations to all of the children who competed, and thank you so much to the parents who made it possible for them to do so.
