On 1 May, St Heliers School participated in the Eastern Zones Orienteering competition. The Year 8 boys team (consisting of Henry, Colden, Oscar, Cooper and Zenith) placed third, qualifying for the Intermediate Auckland Regional Orienteering Championships. Two individuals from Year 7 (Oscar Monroe and Florence Davis) also qualified, and on 15 May the group journeyed to Reeves Farm near Waiuku to compete on a course consisting of nineteen controls, dotted through contoured farm land.

The tournament was undeniably larger than we had anticipated. However, the organization was excellent, and just half an hour from arriving, St Heliers School was summoned to the starting line. The system (like so much of the modern world) had been digitalised, and we were briefed on the use of an ident stick, and given a recondite map. Ten seconds later we embarked on the course!

The tournament was greatly enjoyable and enlightening in the ways of this wonderful sport, and we look forward to further opportunities for the school to participate in future.
