Buildings and Structures

skytower2As part of the ignition for our Term 2 Inquiry on Buildings and Structures; ‘How Can We Build For A Better Future?’, Year 4 travelled into the Auckland CBD to look at and discuss how different architects have responded to and are meeting different building challenges in the CBD as Auckland’s population continues to increase.

During the day, students explored the Sky Tower including The Refuge (Sky Tower’s emergency level) and also had the opportunity to visit the Viaduct, Wynyard Quarter, Silo Park, the gorgeous new ASB complex, the Cloud and Ferry Buildings on Quay Street.

The students concluded that there has been notable change to Auckland CBD’s cityscape and the waterfront is buzzing with activity – both foot traffic and building sites with large cranes that loom over the horizon definitely on the increase.

FUN FACT: During the Sky Tower/CBD trip the students, parents and teachers travelled up 220 metres into the hemisphere in just under 41 seconds and then walked 7.5 kilometres on foot through the CBD in just over two and a half hours.
