Student Leadership

It is important for our students to actively participate in and contribute to the life of the school. Therefore, we provide many opportunities for our students to demonstrate their leadership skills in a range of authentic contexts.

We encourage students to model and uphold our school values. 

Our Senior students are encouraged to take on additional responsibility and leadership roles that help in the running of the school. These roles include Student Leaders, House Captains, School Librarians, Sports Leaders, road patrollers, Tech Team, Travel Wise, Merit Assembly Hosts.

Student Leaders

Student Leaders are Year 8 students selected in Term 1. The Principal talks to all Year 8 students about roles, responsibilities and the process of becoming a SHS Student Leader.

Student Leaders are considered the leaders of our school and must display the following:

  • Being a good role model to all

  • Following all SHS Values

  • Mentoring other students

  • Being Reliable 

  • Willing and able to lead with confidence

  • Able to communicate well with others

  • Awareness of the perspective of others

  • Displaying strong teamwork

  • Making decisions that benefit everyone

  • Treating everyone with respect and kindness

  • Encouraging others

  • Displaying good manners at all times

  • Showing initiative

  • Self regulating learning when out of class

Student Leaders

Student Leaders meet weekly with Mr Valvoi, our School Principal.

Some of the Roles for Student Leaders:

  • Setting up and helping with appropriate school events 

  • Providing ideas for school events

  • Leading School Assemblies

  • Greeting and thanking special guests to our school

  • Working on solutions to any school problems that arise

  • Introducing new children and ensuring they feel welcome and comfortable

  • Sharing and acting on ideas to improve our School

  • Attend regular Student Leader Meetings

  • Assisting with fundraising

  • Showing new families around our school

Sport Leaders

Sports Leaders are chosen by their teachers in Y5 & 6 and Y7 & 8.

Teachers choose 5-6 children per class,

They help teachers collect and return sports gear for Y7 & 8  PE / House sport and Y7 & 8 assist junior teaching teams. 

Y5 & 6 They help teachers collect and return sports gear for Y5 & 6 sport / PE lessons.

Tech Team 

At the beginning of each year, students in Year 7 and 8 are invited to apply for the Tech Team. The Teach Team supports AV and IT needs throughout the school and during all assemblies. 

Road Patrol

Interested Year 7 children are trained by our local Police Constable and are time tabled each week by their classroom teacher to man the Walmsley Road Kea Crossing each afternoon.

Signed permission from parents is required. This patrol is supported by our SLT each day. 

Interested Year 8 children are trained by our local Police Constable and timetabled each week by their classroom teacher to man the St Heliers Bay Road Crossing each afternoon. Signed permission from parents is required. This patrol is supported by our Language Centre and LSC teachers each day.
